Artist Bio
Holly Scoggins was born and raised in a rural abandoned cotton mill town in Western North Carolina. She comes from a heritage of mill workers, child brides, and deeply religious broken homes. As a child she spent hours looking out through old lace curtains viewing the graveyard only two blocks from her house. The pattern of the curtains overlaid an uncertain reality. This screening or double exposure element shows up in much of her paintings and prints. The patterns in her work are also inspired by the Victorian Short story The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. Her artwork has been described as a Southern Gothic memoir, leaving the viewer with something “Beautifully Haunted.”
Scoggins received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting and Drawing from East Carolina University. She received a Master of Fine Arts in Figurative Art in Painting and Printmaking from the New York Academy of Art. Scoggins also studied at Savannah College of Art and Design, Penland School of Crafts, Lamar Dodd School of Art in Cortona Italy, and the Liepzig International Artist program in Germany. Her paintings and prints are included in the permanent collection of The University of Georgia, Chanel Fine Art for Boutiques and the BMW and LIA International Artist Collection. Her work has been exhibited regionally and internationally including a solo exhibition at Berkeley Gallery in NYC in 2010, and most recently at Polk Museum of Art in 2018. Scoggins currently sits as full-time faculty of Fine Art teaching foundations and figurative studies at Polk State College.
